EU-OPENSCREEN

Introducing EU Openscreen

EU Openscreen is a leading European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) dedicated to advancing chemical biology and early-stage drug discovery. As a not-for-profit organization, EU Openscreen provides comprehensive support for developing chemical tools, from assay development and high-throughput screening to the optimization of promising compounds.

With a vast, shared compound library known as the European Chemical Biology Library (ECBL), which houses over 100,000 compounds, EU Openscreen operates as a vital resource for researchers across Europe. The consortium also manages an open-access database and collaborates with more than 30 high-throughput screening and chemistry facilities located in eight different European countries. These partnerships allow scientists to access state-of-the-art technologies and resources to propel their research forward.

Committed to enhancing Europe’s scientific innovation and economic competitiveness, EU Openscreen not only contributes to public health advancements but also aspires to drive innovation by fostering new start-ups in the field.

The challenge EU-OPENSCREEN faced

EU-OPENSCREEN faced the challenge of efficiently managing and storing large volumes of chemical compounds sent by chemists from across Europe. They required a reliable and space-saving solution to streamline their processes within their existing Hamilton robotic liquid handler system.

The solution?

EU-OPENSCREEN chose Micronic sample storage tubes for their innovative design and compatibility. Specifically, they utilized Micronic 6ml sample storage tubes in a 24-well format, which seamlessly integrated into their Hamilton robotic liquid handler. This integration allowed for the efficient handling, storage, and processing of chemical compounds.

Implementation

  • Integration with robotic systems: EU-OPENSCREEN integrated the Micronic tubes into their Hamilton robotic liquid handler, allowing chemists from all over Europe to send their compounds using these tubes.
  • Storage and Sorting: The Micronic tubes, once filled with compounds, are sorted and stored efficiently. The built-in decapper on the robotic system decaps the tubes as needed.
  • Processing: The robotic arm positions the racks in the liquid handler, where the tubes are filled with the required volume of solvent. The tubes are then recapped and processed in the built-in shaker, ensuring thorough mixing of compounds and fluids.

Final Steps: After the final decapping, the pipetting robot transfers the mixtures into smaller tubes or deep well plates, depending on the requirements. These final mixtures are then added to a database, making them accessible to other researchers within a transparent framework.

Conclusion

EU-OPENSCREEN’s successful integration of Micronic sample storage tubes highlights the product’s quality, versatility, and compatibility with advanced robotic systems. This collaboration not only improved EU-OPENSCREEN’s operational efficiency but also contributed to their mission of advancing chemical biology and early drug discovery.
